Depression is like many other chronic illnesses

Depression is like many other chronic illnesses in the sense that it can come about as a result of multiple factors and it can be characterized by a variety out of a long list of symptoms. No one race or nationality is immune from the long arms of this disease. In fact, according to the WHO or World Health Organization, depression is the most costly disease of them all because it disables many people that would more than likely be productive in society. Unfortunately, women are more prone to depression than men are. According to statistics, more than ten percent of the American people will suffer depression so severe that it will warrant a trip to the doctor.

Whenever someone suffers from a mixture of psychological as well as physical symptoms which are considered to be a substantial variation from the person’s normal way of going about things, it is considered to be a diagnosis of a major depressive episode. However, in order for a correct diagnosis to be made, it is going to require much more than a sad mood. During a major depressive episode, every aspect of a person’s life can be affected, which makes it devastating. In addition to experiencing bouts of sadness, someone with an episode can also experience debilitating fatigue, apathy, decreased or absent sex drive, disturbed sleep, lack of appetite, and an inability to enjoy the things that were once considered to be pleasurable. Depression is an illness that leaves its sufferers with feelings of anger, guilt, hopelessness, and worthlessness. Other chronic illnesses can be problematic amongst depression sufferers due to the fact that even a touch of the blues can have devastating effects on the immune system. In addition to all of the aforementioned complications of depression, on-going thoughts of death and suicide are also prevalent among the more severe cases. Depression is not a joke, it can be deadly, if you’re experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms, please see a physician or specialist immediately. According to statistics, 1 out of 8 people will commit suicide during a major depressive episode.

Try not to confuse being sad over the loss of a loved one or some traumatic experience with that of depression. An episode of depression is categorized by unprovoked sadness or is not well proportioned with its ostensible cause. Clinical depression can also be categorized into unipolar depression, which is marked by continuous bouts of sadness as well as bipolar depression
